Aotearoa NZ

Our national section of the international movement was founded in 1993, following five years of associate status from 1988. It was inaugurated as a full member of the International Council at the 50th anniversary meeting in Assisi in 1995. Since then, we have adopted the following statement of mission and goals:

Pax Christi, the Catholic Peace Movement in Aotearoa – New Zealand, addresses issues of peace and justice in the spirit of Jesus Christ.

–       To honour and witness to Te Tiriti O Waitangi

–       To strive for the achievement of sovereignty and self determination for all peoples

–       To work with other peacemakers to achieve the peaceful settlement of conflict by negotiation with mutual respect

–       To engage in active struggle against all forms of injustice, which lead to violence and war

–       To support and empower the victims of violence, injustice and intolerance

–       To work for a world based on respect for all life and the dignity and fundamental freedoms and rights of all persons

–       To proclaim and celebrate the diversity and goodness of God’s creation

–       To live out the peacemaking values we proclaim

–       To foster the formation of groups of peacemakers following the Pax Christi model of prayer, study and action

–       To promote the ideal of peace as witnessed by Jesus Christ
